National Voter’s Day

The Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) is celebrating the National Voters’ Day (NVD) on 15th of September 2019 on the theme Participation as a Natural Responsibility through Democracy Club Meets to Engage and Empower the Youth in all 20 Dzongkhags. The NVD celebrations also coincides with the International Democracy Day with Participation as the international theme.

The primary objective of the day is to enthuse the citizenry and encourage them to engage meaningfully in the democratic process. This year, the Election Commission of Bhutan shifts its focus to the Democracy Club Meets, in the 20 Dzongkhags, with the aim of instilling the values of democracy and its functioning in our youth highlighting Participation as a natural Responsibility, inspired by His Majesty’s Royal Address to the youth and voters.
The programme is expected to be attended by 2,000 Democracy Club members and 241 Club Coordinators in the 20 Dzongkhags.

The planned activities for the day include:

  1. Awarding of Voter Photo Identity Cards (VPIC) to those newly turned 18-years of age, voters with disability and those with Mitsi transfer;
  2. Administration of the Voter’s Pledge;
  3. Party Forum for representatives of the registered political parties which are the standard features of the NVD since its establishment in 2014; and
  4. Elocution Programme, poster competition by the Youth highlighting the theme for this NVD.

The “Message from the Chief Election Commissioner” will be read out at all the Meets by the Chief Guests with officials from the ECB Head Office also attending the programme in the 20 Dzongkhags.
The National Voters’ Day is a call to all voters to remind them of the important role and responsibility of a voter in a democratic society: a society governed through the freely expressed will of the People as enshrined in the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bhutan. We offer felicitations to all worthy citizens and voters of the Kingdom for your participation.
